Some 2,000 refugees from Ukraine arrived Monday in Przemysl, a Polish border town where volunteers waited to help those fleeing war. Many children were among those being escorted off the train for border checks.

The U.N. estimated more than 500,000 people have already escaped Russia's burgeoning war against Ukraine, with Poland being the top destination.

While many arrive by train, long lines of cars and buses have also backed checkpoints at the borders of Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and non-EU member Moldova.

Others crossed the borders on foot, dragging their possessions away from the war and into the security of the EU. A U.N. refugee agency spokeswoman said Monday the latest counts by country stood at roughly 281,000 to Poland, 84,500 to Hungary, 36,400 to Moldova, 32,500 to Romania and 30,000 to Slovakia.
