100th Anniversary : Centennial celebration of the Mandalay University

The Centennial Celebration of the Mandalay University took place at the venue on Saturday with the attendance of Acting President, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. After formal opening of the ceremony, the Senior General unveiled the stone inscription, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Mandalay University.

The Acting President later viewed the progress of renovation works for damaged building during the Mandalay earthquake and display of documentary photos of the University's Chancellors, Rectors and prominent figures. In the subsequent event, students performed with the theme song of the celebration.

Then, the Senior General made an opening speech, saying that the university is a place which nurture qualified human resources  while conducting innovative research works. He highlighted the role of universities, colleges and institutions in the government's efforts for development of agriculture, livestock and industrial sectors, contributing to the socio-economic development of people.

He also stressed the importance of peace and stability in the country so as to pursue education in the peaceful environment. He urged all to strive for development of a nation by turning out qualified human resources who could able to keep abreast with international community.

This was followed by screening of a video clip, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mandalay University, presenting the commemorative gift to the Acting President and entertainment programs. The Acting President later made cash donation for the celebration.

After the ceremony, the Acting President and party took a tour around the exhibition booths and display of research posters. They also enjoyed the entertainment programs staged by Myoma Nyein Music Troupe. The University of Mandalay was originally founded as Mandalay College, an affiliated institution to the University of Yangon in June 1925.

In 1947, it was upgraded to a degree college and named Mandalay University College. In 1958, it became the University of Mandalay and there were faculties of Arts, Science, Agriculture and Medicine. In 1964, the faculties of Agriculture and Medicine were carved out from the university to become separate facilities. Since then, it was called the University of Mandalay.
