Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled on Thursday a federal budget aiming to reduce Canada's economic and technological reliance on the United States. The budget includes a push for AI sovereignty by supporting domestic platforms like Cohere instead of foreign proprietary technology.

Under Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the government expanded the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative with an extra $500 million over five years to help domestic AI companies. The wider budget focuses on shifting away from U.S. tech and trade dependence as part of a broader push for national economic and digital sovereignty.
