At the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, leaders from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) emphasized the role of "Small AI" localized, lightweight, and low-resource artificial intelligence models as a transformative tool for developing economies.

Rather than relying on resource-heavy, multi-billion-parameter Frontier AI models that require massive capital investment, data centers, and heavy energy infrastructure, Small AI focuses on lightweight models tailored to run on modest hardware and low bandwidth.

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted that adoption of targeted AI tools offers smaller enterprises access to credit, operational efficiency, and market reach without requiring capital-intensive tech infrastructure.

While the IMF estimates AI will impact up to 40% of jobs globally, "Small AI" acts as a productivity enhancer rather than a direct labor replacement in lower-income nations, helping bridge the digital divide between advanced and developing economies.
