A ceremony commemorating the International Day of Older Persons was held on Thursday at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw. The event was attended by Chairman of the Myanmar National Committee for Older Persons Union Minister Dr. Soe Win, concerned officials and invited guests.

In his speech, the Union Minister recognized the experience and knowledge of older persons and their contributions to their families, communities, and national development. He stressed viewing older persons as valuable human resources rather than a burden.

He also highlighted this year’s theme: “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”, emphasizing the need to adapt healthcare, social protection, economic, and care systems to longer lives.

The Union Minister also called for greater access to age-appropriate healthcare, healthy ageing, and measures to prevent loneliness.

The ceremony also featured a video on elderly care and rights, the presentation of medicines and cash awards to attending older persons, performances by residents of the Nay Pyi Taw Day Care Centre for Older Persons, and exhibitions of local products produced by mutual elderly care groups from various regions and states.
