University of Tokyo chooses first female president

The University of Tokyo has selected Fujigaki Yuko as its next president, making her the first woman to lead the institution in the nearly 150 years since its founding. Fujigaki, 64, is from Tokyo and graduated from the university's College of Arts and Sciences.

She had served as the vice head of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and specializes in science and technology studies, as well as scientometrics. The university held a selection meeting and picked Fujigaki from three finalists. She will succeed President Fujii Teruo, whose term ends in March next year.
