Thousands of ceramic artifacts recovered in Türkiye

Thousands of ceramic artifacts have been recovered from a 2,100-year-old shipwreck off Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast. The shipwreck lies at a depth of around 55 meters and was carrying plates and bowls believed to have been produced in ancient Rhosus, in present-day Arsuz, Hatay.

Archaeologists identified 122 different ceramic forms and sizes during underwater excavations led by Dr. Hakan Öniz. After being recovered from the seabed, the ceramics were taken to the Antalya Archaeological Museum for desalination before being transferred to Akdeniz University’s Underwater Archaeology Research and Application Center for restoration.
