UN Security Council holds 3rd straw poll on secretary-general candidates

The UN Security Council on Friday held its third straw poll on the candidates for the next UN secretary-general. Security Council straw polls on secretary-general candidates are informal closed-door ballots used to determine the viability of the candidates, whose results are not officially released.

Through straw polls, the Security Council selects a candidate to recommend to the General Assembly for appointment as the next UN secretary-general. Candidates need at least 9 votes in favor and must avoid a veto from any of the five permanent Council members. Another straw poll is expected after the UN General Assembly high-level week.
