International Literacy Day: President attends ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw

The 2026 International Literacy Day ceremony was held on September 8 at the Naypyitaw State Academy, attended by President U Min Aung Hlaing. First, the President was warmly welcomed by officials and students.

Then, he toured the displayed exhibition booths with great interest. Following this, students performed a dramatic presentation set to the song "Education for Everyone." In his opening remarks, the President stated that only by being literate can an individual survive and navigate life using acquired knowledge and skills.

Furthermore, literacy enables people to continuously pursue wisdom and make correct decisions to fully participate in society. Therefore, in line with the slogan "Support education for national development," the state is placing special emphasis on enhancing the education sector.

He noted that UNESCO’s theme for International Literacy Day this year is "Literacy for people, the planet, and prosperity." He added that the Ministry of Education is actively implementing not only formal education but also non-formal education specifically equivalency programs for those who were unable to attend school for various reasons.

The Ministry's persistent efforts to eradicate illiteracy have achieved significant success in 2026, and he called on all citizens to join hands to ensure universal literacy. And, the President presented honorary awards to students who won prizes in the higher education level essay competition for International Literacy Day 2026.

Next, Vice President U Nyo Saw awarded the winners of the higher education level poetry competition, Vice President Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye awarded the basic education level essay competition winners, and Union Minister for Education Dr. Chaw Chaw Sein presented awards to the basic education level poetry competition winners. Afterward, the President and attendees watched a documentary video highlighting literacy initiatives and efforts across various non-formal education sectors. Then, the students gave a commemorative performance of the song "Land Where Flowers of Goodwill Bloom." Finally, the President presented honorary cash awards to the performing students.
