The deadliest measles epidemic in decades in Bangladesh has claimed the lives of 987 children, coming critically close to the grim 1,000-fatality mark. Data from the Directorate General of Health Services revealed that total infections have surged past 181,800 suspected and confirmed cases since the outbreak flared up in mid-March.

Despite emergency inoculation drives targeting millions of toddlers, daily infection rates continue to hover around 1,000 new cases, severely overwhelming pediatric units across the country.
