Opening of Sepak Takraw Tournament: 2026 Region and State Sepak Takraw Tournament opened

The opening ceremony of 2026 Region and State Sepak Takraw Tournament, jointly organized by the Ministry of Sports, the Department of Sports and Physical Education, and the Myanmar Sepak Takraw Federation, was held at Indoor Stadium (A) of the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex in Nay Pyi Taw.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee and Union Minister for Sports, U Ye Myint Tun, who delivered the opening speech. In his opening address, Union Minister U Ye Myint Tun, stated that the Myanmar Sepak Takraw Federation has a proud tradition of bringing glory to the nation by securing a total of 131 medals for Myanmar in Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, and other international competitions comprising 35 gold medals, 41 silver medals, and 55 bronze medals.

He urged everyone to work together to maintain this fine tradition of success in upcoming Asian-level and Southeast Asian-level sporting events. With these words, he declared open the 2026 Region and State Sepak Takraw Tournament. Following this, as per the programme, the competing athletes recited the four sports oaths.

Afterwards, the Union Minister, accompanied by Deputy Ministers and responsible officials, went around to greet the competing teams. The Union Minister then presented a cash reward of 300,000 kyats to the drum and bugle band from Basic Education High School No. 6 in Zabuthiri Township, which had participated in supporting and encouraging the event, and the ceremony was concluded. Subsequently, the Union Minister, along with the Deputy Ministers and officials, watched and cheered for the matches being played in the men's doubles team event between Bago Region and Yangon Region, and in the women's doubles team event between Mandalay Region and Shan State.

The 2026 Region and State Sepak Takraw (Men's and Women's) Tournament will continue to be held for a total of 10 competition days, from August 24 to September 2, 2026, at Indoor Stadium (A) of the Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex in Nay Pyi Taw. A total of 331 competitors will participate, consisting of 15 men's teams and 13 women's teams. Any sports enthusiasts and members of the public may come and watch free of charge, it’s reported.
