Hurricane Lala on Saturday lashed Hawaii with heavy rain, powerful winds, and dangerous surf. The Category 1 storm is dumping up to 2 inches of rain per hour on the Big Island, with localized rainfall totals projected to reach up to 25 inches in higher elevations.

The rainfall will produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain, said the US National Hurricane Center. Hawaii's emergency management agency recommended residents clear gutters and drains and remove tree limbs that threaten their properties.
