Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella declared an economic state of emergency on Wednesday following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country. The emergency power allows the executive branch to fast-track disaster relief, secure funding, and issue temporary economic decrees without prior congressional approval.

The government previously established a special fund to channel domestic and international aid toward reconstruction.
