International Elephant Day, also known as World Elephant Day, is being celebrated worldwide on August 12. India also celebrated the day, highlighting its role as home to over 60% of the world's wild Asian elephants. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders have recognized the nation's 33 Elephant Reserves and praised the forest workers, scientists, and local communities protecting these animals.

India had also launched Project Elephant in 1992 to ensure the long-term survival of elephants in their natural habitats.
