Reforestation Initiatives: Monsoon tree planting ceremony in Pyin Oo Lwin

President U Min Aung Hlaing on Sunday attended the 2026 Monsoon Tree Planting Ceremony in Pyin Oo Lwin Township of Mandalay Region, where he planted a commemorative Blue Gulmohar tree. In his speech, President U Min Aung Hlaing said that annual monsoon tree-planting ceremonies are being held to increase forest coverage, to conserve natural resources, to improve ecosystems, to protect against natural disasters, and to encourage public participation in forest conservation.

He urged officials and the public to continue caring for planted trees to ensure their survival. He also called on communities, government departments, and local organizations to cooperate in expanding green zones, urban forests, and roadside tree plantations to help address climate change and environmental challenges.

A total of 3,000 saplings from eight various species were planted during the event. The first national-level tree planting event was held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 13, where 3,000 trees were planted, followed by similar events across the country with more than 80,000 trees planted. Another national tree planting ceremony was held on June 25, with 3,000 trees of 14 species planted.

The latest national tree planting event was held in Pyin Oo Lwin as part of the city’s greening project, where 3,000 trees of eight species, including Cherry, Khayay, Gulmohar, Pyinkado, Mahogany, and various other hard wood trees. It is learnt that plans are underway to develop Pyin Oo Lwin into a greener and cleaner city by planting 400,000 trees across 2,000 acres this year. The Mandalay Region Forest Department will also distribute more than one million seedlings for planting along roads, railways, and public areas.
