The 500-Bed Specialist Hospital in Yangon has successfully performed its 40th liver transplant.

The surgery was carried out on July 3 for a 48-year-old male patient, who received part of a liver donated by his 25-year-old niece. Both the recipient and donor are recovering in intensive care and are reported to be in stable condition. The operation was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of Myanmar medical specialists with support from Professor Kwang Woong Lee of Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea.

Myanmar has now completed 40 liver transplant procedures since 2004. It is learnt that advanced transplant services will continue to provide domestically to improve access to treatment and reduce healthcare costs for patients.
