Coordination Meeting: Meeting on prevention of communicable diseases

A coordination meeting on diseases that have recently been spreading internationally, as well as other communicable diseases, was held on the morning of 1st June 2026 at the Meeting Hall of Office No. 4 of the Ministry of Health.

The meeting was attended by the Union Minister for Health, Thet Khaing Win, who delivered opening remarks.

In his address, the Union Minister noted that there has recently been an increase in cases of Measles in several countries around the world, including Myanmar's neighboring countries. He also highlighted the detection of Poliomyelitis virus in some countries within the region, emphasizing the occurrence of vaccine-preventable diseases.

He further stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the ongoing outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. He explained that Myanmar is continuously monitoring disease outbreaks around the world and undertaking preparedness measures in accordance with WHO recommendations to prevent the introduction of diseases such as Ebola and Hantavirus Infection into the country.

Following this, the Deputy Minister of Health presented updates on communicable disease surveillance and response activities. The Deputy Director-General (Disease Control) of the Public Health Department then explained the measures being implemented to prevent measles outbreaks, ongoing surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases, timely response activities, and preparedness efforts

. The Union Minister and Deputy Minister subsequently provided additional instructions and guidance on matters requiring attention, after which the meeting was concluded. According to reports, Myanmar has not experienced large-scale epidemic outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles, and continues to place special emphasis on disease surveillance and monitoring activities.
