

Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi received Ms. Gwyn Lewis, the United Nations Acting Resident Coordinator and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, in the morning on May 28th at the Pyithu Hluttaw building in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, the Speaker stated that Myanmar gained independence in 1948 and became a member of the United Nations in the same year. He said that Myanmar’s political history has experienced nearly 78 years of internal armed conflict, and he discussed the circumstances Myanmar has faced over the past five years. He also explained the legislative activities of the Hluttaw, noting that a draft law to combat online fraud has already been prepared and will be prioritized for enactment during upcoming Hluttaw sessions.
In addition, he said that the United Nations could cooperate with Myanmar in humanitarian assistance, national development, and reconstruction efforts.
In response, the Acting Coordinator said that efforts are being made to ensure humanitarian assistance can be safely and unobstructedly delivered to temporarily displaced persons.
She added that the United Nations would cooperate in reconstruction efforts for towns and villages damaged by natural disasters. She also noted that the international community recognizes Myanmar’s effective efforts in combating online fraud and suppressing illegal drugs, and stated that the United Nations would continue cooperating in addressing Myanmar’s needs and supporting development activities.
