Former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa was officially nominated as a candidate to race for the next head of the United Nations. Espinosa was nominated by Antigua and Barbuda, and joins four other candidates already nominated to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who stands down at the end of the year.

The UN Security Council will begin its selection process by the end of July. The successful candidate will begin their five-year term on January 1, 2027.
