Rescue teams were deployed in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany after a humpback whale became stranded in shallow waters.

The 13.5-metre whale was freed twice but stranded again a few hours after the latest rescue effort. Specialist marine teams monitored tide and weather conditions to coordinate further attempts to guide the animal safely offshore. Authorities said repeated strandings can occur when large whales become disoriented in shallow coastal zones.
