A Nairobi court said that a Chinese man was sentenced on Wednesday to a year in prison and fined by the court for attempting to smuggle thousands of ants out of Kenya. Ant smuggling made headlines last year when two Belgian teens were arrested in possession of nearly 5,000 ants, mostly stored in test tubes.

His lawyer said that he was initially charged with wildlife trafficking without a permit and conspiracy, which carries a seven-year sentence. He has pleaded not guilty and the case was ongoing, according to his lawyer.
