India marks 200th birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule

Indian President Droupadi Murmu, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on the Parliament premises in New Delhi. Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was a prominent Indian social reformer who empowered the rights of marginalized communities and was a trailblazer in promoting women’s education.

Along with his followers, he founded the Society of Seekers of Truth, aimed at securing equal rights for peasants and lower-caste communities. In this year, India was commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule with the attendance of country’s top officials.
