Kumamoto City in southwestern Japan said a new type of cherry tree has been found in the grounds of Kumamoto Castle. Officials said it was discovered in a survey of cherry trees there that was conducted in fiscal 2022.

They said the tree is different from the existing cultivated varieties, such as Somei-yoshino, and that an expert said its features could qualify it as a new variety. The officials said its petals change color from white to red, creating a mix of red and white blooms. They say the name of the new type will be decided by a vote of city residents.
