Roads and farmland swallowed with the appearance of a sinkhole in Central Aceh, Indonesia

A giant cavity in Indonesia's Central Aceh region which was caused by volcanic rock structures, which are prone to movement when they interact with water, has swallowed up sections of road, farmland and a high-voltage electricity tower as it continues to grow.

The collapsed area has expanded from 27,000 square meters to 30,000 over the past five years and is currently around 100 meters deep. The ground collapse has destroyed vast swathes of crop plantations and A section of the main road, which connects the district to its neighboring regency, was also engulfed.
