Mon National Day: Mon National Day held in Dawei of Taninthayi

The 79th anniversary Mon National Day ceremony was held at Dawei City Hall in Dawei Township on Monday to strengthen national spirit and promote Mon literature and culture.

Taninthayi Region Chief Minister U Myat Ko, together with concerned officials formally opened the ceremony with a ceremonial ribbon cut, followed by a group photo session and performances of Mon traditional dances.  Region Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Saw Martin Luthar read out a message sent by Union Minister for Border Affairs and Ethnic Affairs Lt-Gen Yar Pyae.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Minister said Mon National Day is observed annually on the first day after the full moon of Tabodwe. It is celebrated in communities where Mon people live to preserve their language, culture and historical traditions and foster unity among ethnic troupes in building a federal union.

He added that the regional government is taking measures to preserve and promote ethnic cultures, literature and arts, and called on Mon people to work together for the continued development of their language, culture, religion, peace and national interests. The ceremony also featured a reading on the origin of Mon National Day. Chairman of the Mon Literature and Culture Committee U Naing Min Naing then expressed words of thanks.
