







Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Khin Maung Yi, visited Shan State (East) to inspect mineral processing facilities and lead discussions on environmental protection on January 26.
The Union Minister first visited a Pilot Mineral Smelting and Refining Plant in Tachileik Township. Officials presented reports on raw material sourcing, smelting equipment, operational processes, and final products.
In his remarks, the Union Minister strongly encouraged the domestic pilot production of high-value finished products from raw minerals. He urged staff to upgrade smelting and refining stages to ensure the production of high-quality materials. The Union Minister later visited another Mineral Refinery in the Tachileik Industrial Zone to oversee operations and provide further instructions.
At the Tachileik City Hall, the Union Minister met with the departmental heads, community elders, social organizations, and local administrators. The primary focus was reducing transboundary haze pollution and fire hotspots.
In his speech, the Union Minister pointed out that approximately 160,000 fire hotspots occur annually in the Mekong region, primarily affecting Northern Thailand, Eastern Myanmar, and Laos. He highlighted ongoing collaboration with local administrators and residents to conduct inspections and educate the public on the dangers of forest fires and shifting cultivation. He noted that fire hotspots in Tachileik District have decreased by 59%, a success he attributed to the collective efforts of the community. The Union Minister urged continued cooperation to ensure a clean, smoke-free environment.
The meeting concluded after technical presentations by the Directors General of the Environmental Conservation Department and the Forest Department. Afterwards, the Union Minister inspected air quality monitoring stations in Tachileik and provided necessary instructions to the monitoring staff, it’s reported.
