






The Meeting of the Geopark Working Committee was held on Wednesday at the Forest Department. Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Min Thu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Geopark Working Committee attended the meeting and made a speech.
He emphasized that coordinated efforts are needed to achieve recognition of Mt. Popa National Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The meeting discussed on the implementation status of the project plan to achieve UNESCO Global Geopark designation for Mt. Popa National Geopark and the requirements necessary for submitting the proposal.
Mt. Popa National Geopark was designated on 6 December 2023 as Myanmar’s first national-level geopark, initially comprising 15 geosites. The establishment of geoparks aims to promote socio-economic development while preserving local cultural traditions. It is reported that efforts are underway to revise and expand the Mt. Popa Geopark which currently established with 15 initial geosites by adding 14 additional proposed areas for submission as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
