Kachin State Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan, accompanied by State level departmental officials, conducted a field inspection in Waimaw Township to coordinate the relocation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently sheltered at the Maina Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) Camp and the Lawwaw Baptist Church Camp on January 19.
The Chief Minister and officials first visited the Maina KBC Camp to hold a meeting with district and township administrative committee members, camp officials, Baptist Church zonal leaders, and the resident families. During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed his profound gratitude on behalf of the households to the Kachin Baptist zonal officials for providing care and shelter within the KBC development compound for nearly 15 years. He encouraged the residents by announcing that a donor has been secured to provide land for their relocation. He further stated that the government would manage the provision of necessary expenses and relocation costs to facilitate the move.
The camp official then presented the relocation plans and requirements for over 180 households currently residing at the KBC camp and more than 40 households from the Lawwaw Baptist camp. Regional ministers, District administrative Chairmen, and resident families discussed the specific needs and support required for the transition. The land donor, U Tin Myint, also participated in the discussion, explaining the location and capacity of the land to be provided for the families.
In response to the discussions, the Chief Minister coordinated with government departments and township administrative bodies to ensure the systematic construction of houses, electricity supply, and water wells on the donated land. To kickstart the project, he provided an initial grant of 15 million Kyats to officials for the construction of buildings and fencing.
Following this, the Chief Minister and officials, along with the resident families, visited the specific site in Maina Village donated by U Tin Myint. They inspected the ground conditions to plan for the construction of temporary housing barracks capable of accommodating all households. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for systematic construction and instructed officials to ensure the project is completed so that families can be relocated before the onset of the rainy season, it’s reported.
