Union Minister for Energy U Ko Ko Lwin visited the No. (1) Oil Refinery (Thanlyin) in Yangon Region on August 30th, to inspect the progress of the refinery project.
The Union Minister heard reports on the preparations for the refinery’s 100th anniversary celebrations and the overall project status. He emphasized the importance of working together to overcome challenges and ensure the project’s success, as this is a significant year for both the Ministry and the refinery.
He also highlighted the need for effective planning and maintaining cleanliness within the refinery area. The Ministry aims to meet the country's demand for refined oil products. As the first phase, a 500,000 tons capacity Modular Type Plant will be operated by the end of this month, with full operations expected by December 2025.
Additionally, a second-phase expansion will be completed by 2028, bringing the refinery’s total capacity to 800,000 tons annually. Once fully operational, the refinery will help reduce foreign currency spending on fuel imports and improve the domestic oil supply, which will support national economic growth and create more job opportunities.
