With great fanfare, a historic 672-tonne red wooden church considered one of Sweden's most beautiful buildings from 1912 began its slow move from its home in Kiruna to a new downtown at a safe distance from the mine. In order to prevent from being swallowed up, the town’s relocation process began almost two decades ago.

Because of the expansion of Europe's biggest underground mine, the residents began seeing cracks in buildings and roads. The ground around the church had been dug out, allowing big yellow beams to be placed underneath so the building could be jacked up on the trailers. It’s set to reopen in the new location at the end of 2026.
