2,000-year-old trade vessel unearthed in Mediterranean depths

A remarkable archaeological discovery has been made off the coast of Adrasan in Antalya, where underwater excavations have uncovered a shipwreck dating back to Early Roman period. Buried under sand for centuries, this ancient trade vessel tells a long-lost story of commerce in the Mediterranean.

The wreck was found at a depth of 46 meters, and the artifacts aboard (mainly plates) are spread between 35 and 46 meters underwater. The site has sparked major excitement in the archaeological world due to its extraordinary preservation.

Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, also participated in the dive that aims to shed light on history. Each cleaning phase reveals hundreds of new historical artifacts from the depths of the Mediterranean. This ancient shipwreck off Antalya’s coast is believed to date back approximately 2,000 years, offering invaluable insights into ancient maritime trade.
