Trainees from the No.118th Intake of Myanmar Forest School are camping at Forest Research Camp No. 5 in Moe Swe, Nay Pyi Taw Ottarathiri Township.
On Saturday, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi visited the campsite and urged the trainees to strive to become qualified individuals who can be relied upon by the department and the state in environmental conservation and forest development efforts.
During the camping period, the trainees participate in building fire barriers for forest plantations, designating forest areas using GPS, conducting soil tests for establishing forest plantations, collecting data on forest resources, and taking land measurements.
The Forest Department is implementing sustainable forest management measures to preserve forest resources, biodiversity, and ecosystems, while safeguarding catchment areas and mangrove forests.
According to statistics, Myanmar’s forest coverage is expected to reach 42.15% by 2025, with a 0.04% decrease in forest depletion between 2020 and 2025. To improve forest coverage, 490 forest reserves and 61 natural conservation areas have been established, covering 25.9% and 6.43% of the country’s area, respectively.
In addition, over 2 million saplings have been planted in 2024 for the greening of 13 arid zones. At the same time, conservation efforts are being carried out to mitigate floods, landslides, and erosion, to preserve catchment areas and coastal resources, and to accelerate efforts to prevent illegal logging.
