A Demonstration Project on Access to Clean Drinking Water for Sustainable Development was successfully implemented at Aung Tha Village in Nay Pyi Taw Lewe with assistance from the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund. A ceremony to mark the successful completion of the project took place at the village on Friday.

Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development, U Hla Moe, attended the ceremony and emphasized the need to maintain the long-term durability of the facilities. Myanmar is striving to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 6, which aims to ensure that everyone has access to clean drinking water by 2030. Statistics show that the country has achieved 89% coverage of water access.

In order to meet this SDG goal, the Department of Rural Development has laid down the strategic goals and action plans and is implementing for rural water supply, sanitation, and hygiene in cooperation with concerned organizations. Under the MLC program, cooperative projects have been established between the two governments and private entities.

The project was undertaken by SPIC (Myanmar) Zero Carbon Energy Company, with technical assistance from the Department. It benefits over 1,800 people in the village by providing access to clean drinking water and also supplying water for livestock farms.
