The Rakhine traditional sandalwood grinding ceremony, held in conjunction with the Water Pouring Ceremony to the Buddha Image in Sittwe on Saturday, commenced with the striking of the Rakhine traditional drum, followed by the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon.
The celebration also featured performances by dance troupes representing various departments. Chief Minister U Htein Lin, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, delivered a speech urging all to safeguard and cherish the distinctive cultural heritage.
The sandalwood grinding ceremony, which has been held since the Danyawady, Waisali, Lay Myo, and Mruak U Eras, continues to be celebrated to this day, passed down from generation to generation.
While every Buddhist country celebrates the Thingyan Festival, the Sandalwood Grinding Ceremony stands out as a unique festival representing the intangible cultural heritage of the Rakhine people.
Following the sandalwood grinding ceremony, the Water Pouring Ceremony took place at the AtulaMarazeinPyayloneChantha Pagoda.
The Chief Minister and wife participated in the ceremony, pouring scented water over the Buddha images. Cash donations were also made for the renovation of the Prayer’s Hall of the Pagoda.
