Hong Kong firefighters said on Friday they were investigating the cause of a huge construction site fire that burned overnight in a busy shopping district. No deaths or injuries were immediately reported after the fire erupted at the Mariners’ Club redevelopment project in the densely populated Tsim Sha Tsui district at about 11pm Thursday.

Hong Kong Company The Empire Group is building a new skyscraper on the site of an old Mariners’ Club. The plan is to house the club and a new hotel, according to the Emperor Group's website. The fire was largely put out by 8:30am and Kowloon deputy chief fire Officer Keung Sai-ming said authorities were still investigating the cause. Firefighters had battled the blaze for about nine hours. People staying in three buildings close to the scene had to be evacuated, police said.
