Northern California residents braced for another round of powerful storms this week after flooding from a New Year's Eve overflow killed one person, washed away a section of a levee system that protects farmland and flooded countless homes and businesses.

A weather phenomenon known as an "atmospheric river" dumped 5-and-a-half inches of rain in San Francisco, the city's second-wettest day on record. It also left a foot of snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

On Sunday rescue crews found one person dead inside a submerged vehicle near Highway 99 in Sacramento County.Another powerful system is expected Wednesday and Thursday that could bring three to four more inches of rain and up to 3 feet of snow in the mountains along with wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. The National Weather Service forecast warned Wednesday's storm could cause widespread flooding and power outages.Crews are rushing to restore power and repair roads before the next storm arrives.
