Commemoration Ceremony: 74th Anniversary of International Human Rights Day

A commemoration ceremony for the 74th Anniversary of International Human Rights Day was held at Myanmar International Convention Center – 1 in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday.

Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the ceremony and made a speech. The Prime Minister stressed the importance for the citizens to enjoy human rights so as to promote socio-economic life and prevailing stability in the entire nation.

Efforts are being made for having equal rights of ethnic national people and achieving national integration. Priorities have been made for national reconciliation and achieving peace by inviting the ethnic armed organizations for holding peace dialogues.

He urged all to make cooperative efforts for the emergence of a society that pay respect and follow the human rights standards included in the Universal Declearation of Human Rights.

It was followed by the explanation on the work undertakings of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission and reading out of the message by the UN Secretary General as well as the screening of a video clip on the human rights day. The winners of the commemorative contests for the International Human Rights Day were also awarded during the ceremony.

The Prime Minister and party later viewed round the documentary photos of the work undertakings of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission. Myanmar became a member of the United Nations on 19th April 1948 soon after the country gained its Independence.

Myanmar also seconded in voting for the adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the UN General Assembly on 10th December 1948. To mark this date, commemoration ceremonies have been held in the world nations annually on 10th December.

Respecting the human rights standards contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, most of the world's countries have incorporated these standards into their constitutions. Likewise, 2008 Constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar added a chapter of “Citizen, Fundamental Rights and Duties of the Citizens”.

Moreover, Myanmar National Human Rights Commission Law was enacted in order to protect the fundamental human rights of the citizens included in the constitution. According to the law, Myanmar National Human Rights Commission was also formed and the commission is carrying out the preventive measures for human rights violations and awareness raising campaigns.
