




Development Committee of Ayeyarwady region designated a plastic bag free day in shopping malls and grocery stores of Ayeyarwady region on every Sunday. It aims to raise awareness about the issues of plastic pollution and its harmful impact on the natural environment.
Bhone Lwin, Director, Development Committee of Ayeyarwady Region said "In 33 townships of Ayeyarwady region, we designated as a plastic bag free day on every Sunday. We prioritized the plan of no plastic day in the markets, shopping malls and grocery stores in the regions. There are about 11 tons of plastic bags produced every day except Sunday and around 4 tons of plastic bags produced on plastic free day. We can use the natural leaves such as banana leaves and almond leaves as a substitute of plastic bags. We can say that this campaign has successful in the region. Plastic bags are difficult to destroy in water and soil as well as the chemicals of plastic bags can harm both people and animals."
As a development committee of Ayeyarwady region, they are working to extend the plastic bag free day not only Sundays but also the other week days to reduce the harmful impact of plastic wastes.
