Scientists believe they have found the largest plant in the world - an underwater meadow of Poseidon's ribbon weed. The seagrass meadow was discovered in Shark Bay, a World Heritage Site in Western Australia.
Initially, it was believed that the meadow was a cluster of thousands of individual species. But a team of the University of Western Australia and Flinders University now say it is in fact just one genetically identical plant. The meadow is believed to be at least 4,500 years old and covers more than 180 square kilometers. The scientists say the meadow used to be even larger, but explained that storms and heatwaves killed off part of it.A variety of plants and some animals, including some amphibians, can reproduce asexually.
