Hundreds of Russian and Belarusian truck drivers were stuck in long queues at Poland's border Saturday, hours before a ban on their vehicles came into effect at noon.

Earlier this month, the EU introduced another wave of sanctions, banning trucks operated by Russian or Belarusian companies from entering or remaining in the bloc.

Exceptions would be made for the transport of mail, medicine, fuel and live animals, according to the EU. Drivers who did not leave the bloc in time could face fines or be at risk of having their vehicles seized by national authorities.
