Candles light Jerusalem church on Easter Saturday

Flames from hundreds of candles illuminated the Rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Easter Saturday. Hundreds of Catholic worshippers and pilgrims from all over the world attended the Easter Vigil service, praying and singing hymns after two years of limitations and virus restrictions.

Led by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and friars of the Franciscan order, the sound of prayer echoed through the centuries old building, where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried. Easter Vigil is held one day before Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion and death on the cross on Good Friday.
