Women polo players are participating in the first-ever female world polo championship taking place in Buenos Aires Argentina. In a sport long dominated by men teams from Argentina, United States, England, Ireland, Brazil and Italy face each other hoping the tournament will provide more opportunities to women in the sport.
The six teams face off at the Campo Argentino de Polo, which is considered a sacred place for the sport. The winners will battle for the title on April 16 with free tickets as an incentive to make women's polo more popular. Matches are played in six parts, known as chukkers, of four minutes and 30 seconds each. Players change horses many times during a match, some of which cost more than $100,000.
