Sea turtles are the oldest living creatures in the world and support to improve ecosystem of coastal area. 7 species of sea turtles are found around the world and 6 species in South East Asia.
There are 5 species in Myanmar and the Department of Fisheries opens three sea turtle conservation camps for their sustainability. The sea turtles usually lay eggs in the ThameeHla Island sea turtle conservation camp in Ngapudaw township of Ayeyawady region.
They come on the land of ThameeHla Island that is located between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. In-charge of the camp said that the significant point of the island is the sea turtles are laying eggs all the year round.
Generally, there were about 300 turtle egg holes in 2004 and now there are about 60 to 80 holes of turtle egg. The number of the egg holes gradually decrease. If people don’t conserve this situation, the sea turtles will be extinct.
The aim of conserving sea turtles is they can be rich in aquatic resources, they can mitigate natural disasters on the beach like tsunami as well as they can improve socio-economic life of the locals as tourists come there to watch sea turtles.
