Hong Kong reported a new record of 8,674 coronavirus cases on Wednesday, as the city prepares to test every resident next month to stick tenaciously to Beijing's "Zero COVID-19" strategy.

Schools have switched entirely online learning and summer holidays have been moved forward so that the buildings can be used as facilities for testing, isolation and vaccination, as the city goes ahead with the plan to test every one of its 7.5 million residents three times.

The order for citywide testing came after mainland Chinese authorities dispatched epidemiologists, health workers and other medical resources last week to help contain the outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. Health officials said last week that hospitals were already at 90% of capacity and isolation facilities were full.
