Preparations for Union Day: Union Flag conveyed from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw

The Union Flag, which has been staying at the Yangon City Hall since 2016, began to convey from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw by a special aircraft on Tuesday morning to mark the Union Day.

At 6:10 am, the Union flag was started to convey to the Yangon International Airport by respective relay teams and the Union Boat from Yangon City hall. Along the route to the airport, departmental officials, respective organizations and the people welcomed the union flag by waving miniature flags.

On arrival at the Yangon International Airport, the relay team handed over the Union flag to the Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein. Then, the Region Chief Minister, flanked by the flag safeguarding team and Union nationals handed over the union flag to Chairman of the Organizing Committee on the Diamond Jubilee Union Day Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn for conveying to Nay Pyi Taw by a special aircraft.

When the union flag arrived at the Nay Pyi Taw airport, Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn handed over it to the relay team led by the Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman. Then, the Union flag was conveyed to Nay Pyi Taw city hall by respective relay teams and union boat to be saluted in the 75th Anniversary of Union Day which will fall on the 12th of February.

Also, along the way to Nay Pyi Taw city hall, the Union Flag was accorded a rousing welcome by departmental officials, staffs and the people waving miniature flags. On arrival at Nay Pyi Taw City Hall, Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman Dr. Maung Maung Naing handed over and planted the union flag in the silver bowl and saluted the flag together with the guard of honour while playing the National Anthem.

The Union Day in Myanmar commemorates the February 12, 1947 signing of a historic Panglong agreement that enabled the birth of a unified republic. The agreement was a key event in the history of Myanmar as it directly led to Myanmar as an independent state in January 1948.
