President Joe Biden vowed on Tuesday to work in close cooperation with U.S. allies "to support refugees and evacuees currently fleeing Afghanistan." Announcing from the White House that he will stick with his Aug. 31 deadline for finishing a U.S.-led evacuation, Biden said the U.S. will be a leader in the effort to resettle thousands of Afghans who eventually qualify for refugee status. Since the Taliban seized the Afghan capital on Aug. 14, more than 70,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan in the largest U.S. airlift in history. Biden said during a virtual summit, the G-7 leaders agreed on Tuesday that they would stand shoulder to shoulder to meet the current challenges faced in Afghanistan.
The president said that includes counterterrorism efforts and operations as the speedy Taliban takeover of the country has revived alarms about a resurgent al-Qaida and new terrorism threats against the U.S.
