U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday raised concerns that the Islamic State group poses a threat as American troops seek to evacuate thousands of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies from Kabul.

He warned the longer U.S. troops remained on the ground would increase the chance that the group would attempt to strike innocent civilians and U.S. personnel near the airport. He suggested that the perimeter had been extended, widening a "safe zone", adding that the Taliban had been "cooperative" in extending some of the perimeter.

The president also thanked U.S. commercial airlines for helping to transport evacuees from temporary sites outside of Afghanistan.
