World Environment Day: Senior General addresses at the Commemoration Ceremony

Chairman of the State Administration Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing addressed at the World Environment Day ceremony, held in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday.

The Senior General said the theme for this year’s World Environmental Day 2021 is the Ecosystem Restoration which described to bring more harmony in the connection between human beings and nature. When it comes to World Environmental Conservation, the sustainability of the environment is essential for surviving of human beings. If the incidences experiencing across the world are considered, the ecosystem is degrading day after day will be found out due to the deforestation, implementation of urban development projects by confiscating the wildlife habitat areas, the extension of agricultural land extremely, excessive fishing, wildfire, and the industrial development which occurs the excessive carbon emission and the expansion of energy extracted industries based on the fossil fuel. According to the FAO’s monitoring, assessment and reporting on forest natural resources of Myanmar in 2000, the country’s forest coverage is mitigating year by year. As the consequences of deforestation, it’s found out that the water in the rivers, creeks and lakes have come to pollute and the freshwater comes to dry up, the beaches and marine areas are degrading, the climate change, soil depletion of hilly regions, mitigation and extinction of biodiversity etc. ecosystem is depleting and the survival of the human beings is under threat. The SAC chairman pointed out the implementations of Myanmar for the environmental conservation that in section-45, basic principles of the union in chapter-1 of the state constitution, it’s stated that The Union shall protect and conserve the natural environment, in section-390 in chapter-8 of Citizen, Fundamental Rights and Duties of the Citizens, it will be seen the fact that Every citizen has the duty to assist the Union in carrying out the matters on the environmental conservation. That is the meaning that the citizens need to carry out the task of environmental conservation individually and nationally etc.

It was followed by the screening of the video message of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Inger Andersen on World Environment Day.

The Senior General later presented prizes to the winners of the first, second and third prizes for the Environmentally Sustainable City Award.

An educative video clip on World Environment Day was later displayed.

After the ceremony, the Senior General and party viewed the commemorative booths displayed there.
