Preparations are underway for COVID-19 vaccination. The 1st bath out of 1.5 million doses of COVISHIELD vaccines for Nay Pyi Taw arrived at the destination on Tuesday. These 1.5 million doses of COVISHIELD vaccine are a gift from India to Myanmar to assist in the fight against COVID-19 outbreak. Vaccination program for medical staff in Nay Pyi Taw area starts on Wednesday, 27th of January 2021. Deputy Director of the Public Health Department in Nay Pyi Taw accepted the doses.

Deputy Director, Public Health Department, Nay Pyi Taw, Dr. Myo Su Kyi said “Here, for the moment, vaccination program prioritizes medical staff, then, we’ll follow the instructions from the Central body. The medical staff includes those from public health departments and public hospitals – over 3,800 medical staff – they will be vaccinated twice.”

The supply of vaccines by India to Myanmar fulfills the commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020. The delivery of vaccines to Myanmar is the result of high-level consultations between the two governments. Manufactured under license by the Serum Institute of India, the vaccine will be firstly given to health workers and other front-line personnel.

It is learnt that, the key government officials, civil services personnel and Hluttaw representatives will be included in the following step. Myanmar also signed an MoU with Serum Institute of India, the manufacturer of COVISHIELD, for procuring additional doses of vaccines directly.
