Farmland Flooded: Over 170 Acres Paddy Field Inundated In Khamti Township

Over 170 acres of farmland were damaged in Khamti Township of Sagaing Region due to the overflow of ChinDwin River.

The water level of Chindwin River rises 2 feet above its danger level during August.

Due to the swollen river, 2,128  acres  of monsoon paddy fields were flooded and over 170 acres damaged while the water recedes.

One of the farmers said the overflow of river was happened twice during August, and one acre of his paddy plantation was damaged.

Farmer, Aung Thar Village, Tin win said “I am engaging in paddy cultivation. The paddy field was destroyed due to inundation. After three or four days, the water declined and I planted paddy again. But the water level rise again and it lasts for about 8 days, causing damage to about one acre paddy field.”

Khamti Township Agriculture Department provides necessary assistance to the farmers to replant their farmlands.

Head officer, Agriculture Department (Khamti Township), Htun Wai said “During 2019-2020 monsoon paddy growing season, 2,128 acres of farmland have been flooded due to the overflow of the ChinDwin River. Over 170 acres of monsoon paddy fields were damaged while the water recedes. The department is providing the reserved paddy saplings to the farmers for replanting.”

There are 8,005 targeted acres of monsoon paddy field in  Khamti Township and  7,859 acres have already grown till the previous month.
